John Carroccia, accused in the shooting death nearly two weeks ago of Hampshire police Sgt. Greg Sears, walked out of the Kane County Jail Tuesday after posting $500,000 bail.

“Thank God for my family, my friends, who have helped me through the way,” Carroccia said as he walked alongside his lawyer, Stephen Komie, and brother Nick about 4:30 p.m. “That’s all I have to say.”

According to Komie, John Carroccia, his family and friends pooled their funds to come up with the bail money, which Komie brought in the form of a certified check.

Carroccia, 50, is accused of shooting Sears, his longtime friend, on June 1, while Sears, 50, was on duty. Sears’ body was found face down across a curb in the Elgiloy Industrial Park in Hampshire near Interstate Highway 90 and U.S. Highway 20.

His squad car, its lights on and engine running, was parked about 20 feet away.
