The poet asked his love, Shall I compare you to a summer day? And those of us who live on the shores of Lake Michigan were relieved–yes, relieved–he didn’t live in our town.

To capture summer in Chicago, his ode would have been epic, interminable. It would have to contain the multitude and the contradiction of this place at this time.

How to explain that the beaches here in summer are so breathtaking that they can easily rival even the most pearly Caribbean island? And then how to rationalize that, for so many city dwellers, that lovely shore is experienced only through their car windows, as they whiz by to work, promising that, yes, this summer, for sure–a day at the beach, volleyball, a picnic, blitz chess at Harper Court, in-line skating, perhaps.

Or maybe a night instead: a bike ride, a slow sail, Venetian nights, the 4th of July on Belmont rocks, a quiet evening walking with a full moon over the water trembling silver.

There are reasons, of course, why some of us never make it to those sandy strands at 57th Street or Fargo Avenue. We’re too busy with the Gospel Festival, the Jazz Festival, the Blues Festival, Taste of Chicago, Halsted Street Market Days, drinking pinot grigio on the terrace at the Museum of Contemporary Art, lolling with our feet in the water at the boathouse at Humboldt Park, eating creamy mango paletas bought from a street vendor on 18th Street, or just shooting hoops in the ‘hood.

To help you sort through all these options, we are introducing the first Friday section Part 2, one of three new annual guides (Summer, Fall and Holiday) designed to last through an entire season.

For now, it’s almost summer in Chicago: THERE’S JUST TOO MUCH GOING ON !!!!!!!
