Once upon a time, when the gallery scene was much smaller than it is today, prominent local artists exhibited in art fairs, and of all of them, the 57th Street Art Fair was the place to be. Started in 1948, it’s the oldest juried fair in the city and the one that still attracts the most visitors. This year’s installment will show work by more than 300 artists — those on the “cutting edge” have long since departed to galleries-in traditional media. It will take place from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, from Kimbark Avenue to Kenwood Avenue between 56th and 57th streets. 773-493-3247.
