The trails are intended to link neighborhoods, schools and parks with the recreational Old Plank Road Trail that runs through the community.
Old Plank Road, popular with walkers, joggers and skaters as well as bike riders, is causing a bit of a traffic problem because many people have to drive their cars to get there, said Robin Traubenik, planning and development director.
The Metra commuter station is another destination for drivers, but car traffic might diminish if bike racks were available for commuters, said Cory Lund, Plan Commission chairman.
Identifying the best places for bike paths is another step, Traubenik said. The village already has a plan to designate some areas of town as open space or “greenways,” she said.
New Lenox’s streets are wide enough to accommodate an on-street bike path if village officials choose that option, she said.
While properly marked on-street bike paths are considered safe for most riders, small children should ride on the sidewalks, said Lee Cotton, a planner for the village.
