Baseball fans hungry for an old-fashioned slugfest could have feasted Tuesday on Glenbard North’s 12-9 victory at West Chicago.

Each team had 15 hits, and 10 of the 30 hits went for extra bases as Glenbard North improved to 18-4, 9-2 in the DuPage Valley. West Chicago fell to 7-11, 1-10.

Almost every batter in both lineups was a “tough out.” For example, West Chicago’s top pitcher, Dan Barzo, had 15 of his pitches fouled off and needed 48 pitches to get through the four-run top of the first inning. And West Chicago’s Nos. 7-8-9 hitters–Tim Warren, Kevin Stott and Joe Lureau–combined for six hits.

“We usually do hit like this,” Glenbard North coach Mike Franzen said. “But we usually do other things better than we did today–like field the ball.”

Franzen’s center-fielder, Brian Shipbaugh, proved to the slickest fielder. He made a diving catch of Phil Piemonte’s drive into the gap. Leading hitters included both leadoff men. Glenbard shortstop Eric Markovic had four hits, and West Chicago designated hitter Tommy Huen had a single, double, home run and three RBIs.
