Supt. Tom Mullins and Business Manager Jim Troha told the school board recently that they expect to retire at the end of the next school term, on June 30, 2001.
Mullins, who began his education career in 1967, became superintendent of the district in 1995. It was his second job in the district–he was principal of Oakview Junior High School from 1980 to 1986. From 1986 to 1995, he was an assistant superintendent, then superintendent, in Matteson Elementary School District 159.
Mullins’ tenure has seen a period of intense growth, with enrollment increasing by 1,000 youngsters and four schools being built–Cherry Hill Kindergarten Center, Nelson Prairie, Nelson Ridge, and Martino Junior High. Enrollment in the district stands at more than 4,200 pupils.
Also, renovation work is still under way to convert the former Haven School building into an administrative center. And each school has been equipped with computer labs and classroom computers.
By the time Mullins retires, a junior high school will be nearing completion on the north side of the village.
The superintendent’s retirement plans include teaching, consulting and traveling, as well as family time and Chicago Cubs games.
Troha has been district business manager for 21 years, presiding over budgets that have grown with the district, from $3.5 million when he started to $21 million this year.
Troha, who oversaw the computerization of the business office, is especially proud of winning a certificate of excellence for financial reporting from the International Association of School Business Officials.
Troha plans a relaxing retirement and intends to spend a lot of time on the golf course.
The school board will begin the search for a new superintendent and business manager later this year.
