Drivers with a need for speed will have to find a new shortcut in New Lenox.
The gate is down across a roadway linking the parking lot of the Lions Community Center at 1 West Manor Drive with the parking lots of a bank and strip mall on U.S. Highway 30.
“The gate is going to stay closed,” Park Board Vice President Robert McKenna said.
Too many people are speeding through the community center parking lot, endangering children attending park activities, McKenna said.
The parking lot route is used by drivers to avoid traffic on U.S. 30.
And after a recent incident in which a mother and child barely escaped injury from a passing car, district officials decided to close the gate permanently.
