The McHenry County Board’s Planning and Development Committee will have to wait to decide whether to drop a $16,192 fine against a company that built a large addition without a building permit.

The matter was on the agenda Friday, but the owner of Chemtool Inc. did not show up.

James Athans, owner of the Crystal Lake-area company, which makes machine lubricants and related products, was to argue his case against the penalty. But he was called out of town on business and could not attend, said Planning and Development Director SuzAnne Ehardt. The committee plans to reschedule the discussion.

Ehardt wants the county to make Athans pay $16,192 to cover the cost of the permit he legally needed for construction of the 35,200-square-foot addition and an equal amount as a penalty.

Athans has agreed to pay for the building permit but objects to the penalty.
