Keeping senior citizens in the community even if they can’t afford rising housing costs is the goal of a New Lenox Township housing plan, Township Supervisor Guy Sell said recently.

Township voters will be asked Tuesday to approve a $2.3 million revenue bond issue to finance construction of a 24-unit apartment building for senior citizens on township land at 1100 S. Cedar Rd.

The bond issue would not raise property taxes because the debt would be repaid from income generated by tenants’ rents, the supervisor told the audience at a candidates forum sponsored by the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce.

The Frankfort Township Board has built two senior citizen buildings that are being paid for by rental income, Sell said.

The 24-unit building is designed as independent living units for senior citizens age 62 and older, he said.

The decision was reached after surveying township residents, he said.

“Housing for seniors was something they were telling us they wanted to see,” he said. The supervisor said there is already a waiting list for the units, with 55 people signed up for an apartment.
