Last week, we told you what it takes to visit Canada — for adults, children, pets and autos. This week:
Taxes: Canada imposes a 7 percent GST (Goods and Services Tax) nationwide. Apply for tax rebates on certain purchases by keeping receipts and filling out the Tax Refund for Visitors form, found at Canadian customs, some tourism information centers, shops and hotels.
Some provinces impose a PST (Provincial Sales Tax), for which Quebec and Manitoba allow rebate applications. In Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, a 15 percent HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is levied; it combines the GST and PST, and is eligible for rebate application.
Duty-free: Stay 48 hours or less in Canada, and return with up to $200 in goods, 5.1 ounces of alcohol, 50 cigarettes or 10 cigars (but not from Cuba). Stay more than 48 hours, and return with up to $400 in goods, 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars.
