After raising $8.8 million in a referendum measure two years ago and witnessing months of controversy over the demolition of an old school last year, the Batavia Public Library District will finally hold its groundbreaking at 10 a.m. Saturday for a new library that will be built where the school stood.

In 1992, the district bought the long-vacant junior high school and its 3.8-acre site on Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue. Its move to raze the school to make room for the two-story, 45,000-square-foot library triggered opposition. The school was demolished last summer.

A.J. Maggio Co. of Mt. Prospect will begin construction in April.
