A proposed office building complex will benefit Mokena, but the layout should encourage pedestrian traffic, village officials said at a work session Monday.

Olivieri Brothers Inc. is seeking village approval of a plan to build two three-story office buildings on 2.6 acres at 9500 and 9550 Bormet Drive.

The village’s Planning Commission has recommended approval, but it called for the addition of sidewalks to connect the buildings to nearby La Grange Road.

Alan Zordan, community development director, said the sidewalk was recommended because two large buildings would bring in numerous workers, and the availability of a sidewalk leading to restaurants and stores would cut down on the accompanying traffic congestion.

“There’s a need to keep people from getting in their cars to go next door,” Zordan said.

But architect John Olivieri said other office buildings were not required to put in sidewalks, a project that could prove costly. “We don’t want to be the only one,” he said.
