Village Trustee Robert Joyce vowed last week to use Monday’s Village Board meeting to override Village President Lou Sherman’s vetoes of three resolutions.
Joyce, who sponsored the three resolutions at the Feb. 7 village board meeting, said he expects trustees John Cashman and Charles “Chuck” Tieri, as well as Anthony Santori, a former political ally of Sherman’s, to help form a two-thirds majority to override the vetoes.
“I don’t want to speak for him (Santori), but he voted for the resolutions to begin with,” Joyce said.
One resolution requires Police Chief Richard Stultz to wear a uniform while on duty. The other two resolutions transfer a laptop computer and a 1997 Ford Explorer from the Police Department to the village clerk’s department.
“I have never seen the current chief in uniform,” Joyce said, adding the resolution requires almost all Steger police to wear uniforms. Excluded from the requirement are detectives and officers performing undercover work.
Sherman vetoed the resolutions at the Feb. 21 Village Board meeting. At the time, Sherman said trustees do not have the power to address administrative issues.
Joyce shrugged off Sherman’s latest veto, noting he and his three allies have overridden other vetoes by Sherman since they were seated in early 1999.
“He’s done it before, when we first took over and wanted to change some things.” Joyce recalled. “We’ll override him at the next board meeting.”
