Overtime costs at the McHenry County-run Valley Hi Nursing Home have taken a big drop, helping to improve the financial health of the institution, according to Administrator Jon Platakis.
Platakis told the County Board’s Valley Hi Committee on Thursday that overtime costs in December and January totaled $24,443, down from $37,096 a year earlier. He expects further drops in overtime costs in coming months, thanks to newly hired certified nursing assistants and less turnover in those positions.
Last year the County Board approved raising pay for nursing assistants in two stages. Starting pay climbed from $7.85 an hour to the current $8.75. Afternoon- and night-shift workers earn $1 an hour extra.
