The issues of how far Batavia School District 101 elementary pupils living on the east side will be bused to school next year and the new home of the district’s multiple-intelligence curriculum program dominated Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

Construction of elementary schools on the east and west sides of town was part of a $26.2 million financing package approved by voters last spring. In recent weeks, school board officials separated the district’s 2,565 elementary pupils into clusters, using subdivision borders as well as the Fox River and the main drag of Wilson Street.

The district now has four elementary schools with general curriculum as well as McWayne School, which uses a multiple-intelligence curriculum that is based on the theory that children learn in different ways.

The school board so far has two options for where pupils within the clusters would attend school and presented them to the more than 150 people in attendance Tuesday night.

A number of residents objected to east side children being bused to a school farther removed than the one closest to their homes.

Some residents whose children attend McWayne objected to having the new west side school adopt the multiple intelligence curriculum instead of having it as a school within a school.

After the new schools are open, McWayne is to become the district’s administrative offices.

The school board will hold another workshop session at 7 p.m. March 14 and is to vote on the final boundaries on March 21.
