Orland Park-based Consolidated High School District 230 board members are poised to offer students a course blending art and technology that one teacher characterized as “cutting edge.”

Alan Hiller, an art instructor at Stagg High School in Palos Hills, gave an overview of the proposed Multimedia Design class recently at Sandburg High School in unincorporated Palos Township.

The school board is expected to approve the class on interactive, three-dimensional computer art at its March 13 meeting.

The course would begin this fall.

Hiller said that students will learn to create audio, visual and animation presentations. Applications of such knowledge, according to Hiller, include broadcast-quality videos, multimedia Web page design and interactive CD-ROMs.

“These skills are in high demand in the job market,” he said, citing as examples computer game design and digital publishing.

Hiller said few schools in the area offer such a course.

“This is relatively cutting edge,” he said. “There’s a desire and a need for it. I think it will take off.”

“You’re influencing this whole district,” Supt. Tim Brown told Hiller. “The power of what you’re doing goes far beyond the classroom.”
