The Field Museum of Natural History this weekend will host the Ibeji International Women’s Festival, a mother/daughter overnight event examining the cultural richness of women’s lives.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and ending at 10 a.m. Sunday, the festival will offer talks about mother/daughter rites of passage, a Night Market featuring gifts made by women, and a film festival.

Latin dance, North African belly dancing and Jewish folk dancing will be offered, as well as temporary henna tattoos and hair braids. Women also can hear creation myths from a variety of cultures.

“We have asked women from different cultures to participate so that we will be sharing and understanding each other better,” said Selena Derry Awoleye, founder of the Ibeji Resource Center. “We all feel the need for this; we’re all interested in making this connection.”

The word Ibeji means “twins” in the African Yoruban language, and is intended to suggest the uniting, or “twinning” of women from different traditions, Awoleye said.

The fee ranges from $46 to $140, depending on museum membership and whether a participant attends all of the festival. Call 312-665-7400.
