A public information meeting on the spring and summer reconstruction schedule for Geneva’s 3rd Street will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 29 at the city’s Public Works Facility Training Room, 1800 South St.

Last month, the city began the 10-month, multimillion-dollar reconstruction of the shopping strip in downtown Geneva, with the installation of new pipes to replace the century-old water mains.

The first of four phases, that work is scheduled to be completed by March 9.

The project calls for seven blocks of the street–from the train station north past State Street to Hamilton Street–to be overhauled with new water mains, an upgraded underground electrical system, a rebuilt surface and enhancements of the streetscape, at an estimated cost of $4.5 million.

The street, dominated by shops, boutiques and restaurants, many housed in expansive 19th Century former homes, is a strong contributor to the city’s sales tax revenue, which was $2.7 million last fiscal year.

This project follows the 1995 massive downtown State Street reconstruction and the replacement two years earlier of the State Street bridge over the Fox River.
