The Arlington Heights Plan Commission Wednesday night voted 5-2 to support a proposal to build a 229-space parking lot on the north side of the St. Viator High School campus.

School officials addressed a list of more than a dozen concerns compiled by residents opposed to portions of the parking proposal. Foes of the plan have cited concerns about lighting, drainage and safety.

School officials made a few concessions to opponents regarding lighting of the lot on East Oakton Street but refused to budge on one central issue: 41 spaces to be built on the lot’s east side behind several homes on Derbyshire Lane.

Despite residents’ concerns, village officials determined that the school’s plan was “well-designed and efficient.”

At least one commissioner chided people that were both for and against the plan. “I’ve heard way too much inflamed rhetoric from both sides at two meetings,” said Commissioner Drake Mertes, who voted against the proposal.

School officials agreed to remove six 20-foot-tall light poles proposed for the east side of the school, but three would remain. A 7-foot-tall fence would separate some of the homes from the lot.

The Village Board is expected to vote on the plan at a future meeting.
