Anticipated enrollment increases in Orland Park-based Consolidated High School District 230 will result in several new staff members, according to officials.

Supt. Tim Brown said Monday that an increase of 106 students is expected districtwide for the 2000-2001 school year, which would bring the total to 7,489.

Districtwide, 6.8 new teachers will be hired, Brown said, adding District 230 counts each class as one-tenth of a teacher.

This means some of the added staff will be full-time, some part-time, and some will be shared by the schools. Plans also call for the hiring of two full-time special education teachers and a technology mentor.

Brown estimated the average teacher salary in the district is $50,000, which means the added staff will cost $340,000 more in wages.

Board members on Monday granted preliminary approval to the recommended staffing levels.

“This gives us permission to begin building schedules for next year based on preliminary enrollment figures,” Brown said.

No change in enrollment at Stagg High School in Palos Hills is expected, according to Brown, but Sandburg High School in unincorporated Palos Township is expected to rise from 3,173 to 3,226. Andrew High School in Tinley Park is anticipated to see an increase to 2,260 students from 2,207.

The increase follows the pattern of the last several years, except for 1997-98, when enrollment dropped by 90. Enrollment for the current school year is up 141 over 1998-99.
