Times have changed for John Schneiter. His days as basketball coach at New Trier behind him, Schneiter, 66, keeps a low profile these days as boys coach at North Shore Country Day.

But the thrill he gets from coaching remains the same, Schneiter said Tuesday after his Raiders downed Lake Forest Academy 46-27 to give him his 750th career victory.

“I still enjoy working with the kids,” said Schneiter, who began coaching boys in 1960 at Stephen Decatur and won a state title there in 1962.

“As long as I can put one foot in front of another, I’ll coach,” added Schneiter, who coached New Trier’s boys from 1963 to 1981, when he became girls coach. He won 342 girls games by the time he left the school in 1997 and took over at North Shore Country Day.

“I’m probably doing more coaching this year than I’ve ever done in my life,” Schneiter said. “We don’t have many tall players.”

His tallest starter, 6-foot-1-inch Tom Doar, scored 12 points to lead struggling North Shore (5-14, 1-4) past Lake Forest Academy (7-5, 0-5) in the Independent School League.

Schneiter has a career record of 750-330, but it cannot be found in the state record books because the Illinois High School Association does not track combined boys and girls coaching records.

Dick Van Scyoc, who last coached at Peoria Manual and retired in 1994, holds the boys state record with 826 career victories and Marshall coach Dorothy Gaters holds the girls mark with 672.
