The New Lenox Elementary District 122 School Board will seek grants to finance beefed up security at school entrances.
The School Board Site Committee decided earlier this week to seek a state grant to help pay for more controlled entrances at Martino Junior High and Bentley, Tyler and Oakview Schools.
Work at those four schools will cost about $94,000, board member Jeanne Kragie estimated.
Supt. Tom Mullins said the district will apply for a $50,000 state grant and may be able to pay the remainder of the costs with money from the sale of school district land on the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 30 and School House Road.
Remodeling the entrance to Haines School, built in the mid-1960s, will be more expensive, Kragie said.
A small addition that would cost about $200,000 would provide a secure entrance and more space for the school’s small, cramped office.

The Haines project could be included in work to be funded with money generated by a bond issue voters will be asked to approve on March 21, Kragie said.
The bond issue would pay for a new junior high school on the north side of the village and other school projects, including an addition to the Cherry Hill kindergarten center.
