Senior Danielle Green proved Monday night that she can be more valuable to Notre Dame’s women’s team coming off the bench than starting.

Green, from Roosevelt High School in Chicago, led the 10th-ranked Irish to a 74-59 victory over visiting Southern California.

Notre Dame (7-2) led 34-32 at the half because Green started rallies that brought the Irish back from deficits of 18-10 and 23-16.

“Danielle broke open the game offensively and defensively,” Irish coach Muffett McGraw said. “She was a spark off the bench. She made us better. So I started her in the second half.”

Green triggered another surge that carried the Irish to a double-digit lead five minutes into the second half.

“I’m comfortable with my role, whether I start or not,” said Green, who scored 11 points and made three steals in 17 minutes. When Southern Cal started so aggressively and made so many steals early in the game, I made up my mind I’d pressure them when I got in and I’d do the same thing to them that they did to us.”

Notre Dame survived 30 turnovers. Southern California (5-4) made 19 steals, 13 in the first half.

“Danielle turned the game around with her great defense and offense,” said freshman Alicia Ratay, the game’s high scorer with 19 points. “We felt the lift when she came on the floor.”

Ratay went 4 for 5 from three-point range. Danielle Golay led Southern Cal scorers with 16 points.
