Not as much was riding on Saturday’s basketball game between No. 16 Schaumburg and Naperville Central as the last time the two schools met in an athletic contest.
Naperville Central got the better of it in the Class 6A football championship game but Saturday, Schaumburg (6-1) administered a little payback, knocking off Naperville Central 53-51 in overtime.
“For me personally, I wanted to get back at (Naperville Central),” Schaumburg’s Don Anderson said. Anderson is a starting forward on the basketball team and was the starting tight end on the football squad. “Maybe it was another game for some of the others. But it was especially important to me.”
The Saxons Larry English played like it was important to him as well. English scored the last 12 points of the game for Schaumburg–including all five in overtime–to finish with 22.
“I missed a lot of shots early, but coach said `keep shooting,’ ” English said.
Schaumburg took its first lead since the second quarter when English hit two free throws to put the Saxons ahead 51-50 with 44 seconds remaining.
After Naperville Central tied it with a free throw, English buried two more free throws with 14 seconds left for the game-winner. Naperville Central had two chances in the final seconds to win and then tie, but missed a pair of shots.
Brazley Barnes had 15 to lead Naperville Central (5-3).
Streamwood 67, Bartlett 49: No. 20 Streamwood (7-0, 3-0) won in the Upstate Eight with Theo Powell’s 16 points and Tim Frick’s 15.
Antioch 45, Libertyville 31: Don Lackey and Eric White each scored 15 points as Antioch (4-2, 3-0) prevailed in the North Suburban.
Barrington 45, Willowbrook 43: Reid Redmann hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to lift Barrington (2-5) past Willowbrook (5-3).
Benet 57, Joliet Catholic 45: Benet was victorious in the East Suburban Catholic with D.J. Lipke’s 17 points.
East Aurora 71, Downers Grove South 56: Darius Lathen scored 23 of his 32 points in the first half as East Aurora (5-2) upended Downers South (1-6). Lathen connected on 13 of 16 field-goal attempts and made 5 of 6 three-pointers. Dave MacDonald scored 16 to lead Downers South.
Elgin 62, DeKalb 39: Marcus Smallwood scored 21 of his 25 points in the first half and Marcus Howard added 22 as Elgin (7-1, 3-0) rolled in the Upstate Eight.

Fenwick 60, Marquette (Wis.) 56: Brendan Laird scored 16 points and Reggie Stovell added 15 for Fenwick (5-2).
Fremd 51, Glenbrook North 43: Michael Koenig scored 16 points, including 12 on three-pointers, and Ryan Long added 10 points to guide Fremd (6-1). Fremd opened with a 10-2 run, but Glenbrook North rallied to come within three points by the third quarter. Koenig followed with back-to-back three-pointers to put the game away.
Ben Helfrich and Oren Jacobson each scored nine points for Glenbrook North (2-5).
Holy Trinity 81, Clemente 43: Damien Bracy scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to pace Holy Trinity (2-5).
IMSA 55, Mendota 51: Charles Hwang’s 26 points led IMSA (2-4).
Montini 65, St. Benedict 52: Ryan Neill scored 23 points and Brandon Bartolucci added 18 to lead Montini (6-1).
Mundelein 51, Warren 49: Mundelein (6-1, 3-0) held on for the North Suburban victory and was led by Graham Beatty, who had 25 points with seven rebounds. Nate Alden scored 14 for Warren (5-2, 2-1).
Nazareth 62, Luther North 50: Marcus Thrus scored 18 points to lift Nazareth.
Oak Park 85, Addison Trial 70: Pierre Monagan scored 32 points and Johnathan Cheeks added 21 as Oak Park (3-3) led from start to finish in the non-conference matchup.
Timothy Christian 67, Chicago Christian 52: Doug Slinkman scored 14 points as Timothy Christian claimed the Private School League clash.
Walther Lutheran 83, Luther South 48: Anthony Bell scored 18 points and Bo Flowers chipped in with 14 as Walther Lutheran (4-2, 1-2) prevailed in the Private School League.
Wheaton Academy 64, Illiana Christian 60 (OT): Wheaton Academy scored all seven of its points in overtime from the foul line to take the Private School League contest. Jim Gurak scored 15 points to lead Wheaton (5-2, 4-0) and Dan O’Hara added 12.
“We have been consistent, especially hitting the big free throws,” Wheaton coach Andy Euler said. “At the end of regulation, I said we have a four-minute game. We needed to come out in our basic defense and make some shots.”
Mike Natelborg scored 19 points, including a three-pointer with :02 left in regulation to force overtime for Illiana (1-6, 1-3). But Natelborg fouled out with 2:26 remaining in the extra session.
Wheaton Warrenville South 58, Oswego 48: Wes Devries scored 20 points to pace Wheaton South.
York 57, Buffalo Grove 54: Rashad McSwine scored six of his game-high 24 points in overtime as York (6-1) prevailed. Grant Sandstead had 21 to lead Buffalo Grove (2-6). Rick Tiltges sent the game into overtime for Buffalo Grove with an off-balance three-pointer with :03 remaining. Tiltges finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
“It’s a good win for us,” York coach Jim Prunty said. “We’re a very young team. It was very important for our growth as a team.”
