Some guidelines may be needed for signs that advertise community events, the Mokena Zoning Board of Appeals agreed recently.

The Village Board is looking for guidelines to control the number and placement of signs advertising events, such as festivals, craft shows, dinners and other social gatherings, Community Development Director Alan Zordan said.

With so many activities scheduled, “it’s starting to get a bit cluttered at times,” Zordan said.

Limiting the number of signs to one at each of five intersections should cut down on the visual clutter an oversupply of signs can create, zoning board members said.

Board Chairman Robert Horras said directional signs are needed to help people find locations, such as St. Mary’s Church or St. John’s Church, that are not visible from the main roads.

A two-week limit for posting signs would also help reduce the number on view at any given time, Horras said.

Board member April Kraicik was more concerned about the appearance of signs than the number. “Some of them are getting to look quite tacky,” she said. “The only time you see an overabundance of signs is the political (season).”

Five intersections were chosen for posting community event signs: one on La Grange Road at LaPorte Road, and four on Wolf Road at Front Street, 191st Street, 187th Street and U.S. Highway 30.

The intersection of 191st Street and La Grange Road is too busy to be an effective sign location, Horras said.

“(That) corner is so busy I couldn’t read a sign if I wanted to,” Kraicik said.

The proposed limits on signs will be forwarded to the Village Board, Zordan said.
