Substitute teachers in Lake Bluff School District 65 are getting a pay raise.

The school board this week voted to increase pay to $80 a day from $70 a day in an effort to attract more qualified substitute teachers to the district.

“Our present rate of $70 is in the lower half of rates across the county,” Supt. Mark Van Clay said before the vote. The new $80-a-day rate places the district in the upper third across the county. The raise is effective Monday.

Van Clay said the district is dealing with a shortage of substitute teachers, not unlike a number of other school districts across the metro region.

“I’m not sure why (there’s such a shortage),” he said. “We’re hiring (full-time teachers) out of the sub pools and just not finding anyone to replace them.”

He said he hopes the pay increase will make a difference.

Substitute teachers must have a college degree, but it does not have to be in education. They also must be certified by the regional superintendent of Lake County.
