Tinley Park residents no longer have to fear being awakened by eager construction workers who often start work at the crack of dawn.

Village Board members are expected to grant final approval Dec. 7 to an ordinance banning such activity between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. when the site is within 300 feet of a residential area.

The law also stipulates construction is not allowed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on buildings located within 300 feet of non-residential areas.

Trustee Greg Hannon said the limits on noisy construction were not spurred by a high volume of complaints but do ease the way for resolution of such problems when they occur.

“When we do get complaints, we must take decibel readings,” Hannon said, adding that will not be necessary under the new law. “Our policy has been a 7 a.m. starting time for construction. This takes that policy and puts it in the form of an ordinance.”

Hannon said the law is geared to residential neighborhoods and will be “enforced as needed,” meaning if a building undergoing work is in an isolated area, the work would be allowed to proceed.
