Maine South’s Colleen Van Hoesen and Lauren Colletti came up huge in Maine South’s 59-48 upset of fourth-ranked Buffalo Grove on Tuesday.
Van Hoesen and Colletti each scored 12 points, and Van Hoesen added 15 rebounds to lead the 17th-ranked Hawks past a Bison squad that never found its groove in the Buffalo Grove tournament played in Park Ridge.
“I’m not sure (Van Hoesen and Colletti, both 5 feet 10 inches) qualify as twin towers, but they sure play nicely together,” Maine South coach Mike Deines said.
Van Hoesen and Colletti complemented Katie Ristau, who scored 13 points for Maine South.
Even though the Hawks (3-1) shot just 36 percent from the field in the first half, they still managed to build a 27-16 advantage by forcing Buffalo Grove (2-1) into 12 turnovers.
South eliminated any hopes of a Buffalo Grove comeback by making its first five shots in the fourth quarter.
