The library building, which the city purchased by agreeing to pay for $1.8 million in furnishings and fixtures at a new library now under construction, will be vacated next summer, officials said.
During Thursday night’s meeting of the City Council’s Community Development Committee, officials of the senior center said that they have outgrown their present building at 515 E. Thacker St.
Larry Gillie, board president of the senior center, asked to purchase the 40,000-square-foot library building from the city for $1. So far, the senior center has raised $1.1 million, which it hopes to use to renovate the old library.
Local philanthropist Eva Frisbie has donated $1 million to the senior center “for the purpose of acquiring and renovating the library,” she said Thursday night. “That $1 million will be returned to my estate if it is not used to acquire the library building for the (seniors),” Frisbie said.
