The price tag for New Lenox Commons improvements comes to about $1.5 million, including “all the bells and whistles,” trustee Gary Mueller told the Village Board this week.

The first work to be done on the New Lenox Commons, a tract of land south of U.S. Highway 30 and north of the Village Hall on Haven Avenue, will be a road through part of the future town center.

Also slated to begin in the spring is construction of a new library.

Landscaping work, including a pond, is also planned for the area, Village Administrator Russ Loebe said.

“Everyone agrees the time to move forward is now,” Loebe said. The Village and Library Boards are both “on target with their budgets,” he said.

But budget problems are affecting the New Lenox Park District’s ability to pay for some of the improvements to the Commons, where Park District-owned land has been earmarked for a recreation center.

Mueller said the officials plan to advertise for bids for the Commons work in January and award contracts in February so work can begin in the spring.
