Trustees in Mokena have turned down Frankfort Township Assessor Paul Ruff’s request for financial backing to defend against tax challenges.
Ruff, who has been making the rounds of township taxing bodies, said industrial and commercial property owners are getting away with tax challenges because he does not have enough money to mount a defense.
The village could appropriate $2,300 for tax-challenge defense but would not gain financially, Trustee John Mazzorana said.
“There is no gain in this,” Village Administrator John Downs said recently.
Trustee Edward Jancauskas said Mokena should not be the only taxing body to finance tax defense. The Frankfort Township Board and local school districts are not contributing any money, he said.
