After opening a comfortable lead, St. Francis de Sales sweated through its season opener, topping Lourdes 63-55 in the Madonna Tournament Wednesday night.
Lourdes (0-1) led into the second quarter, but De Sales took control behind Roberta Hooper’s 20 points and Valen Vega’s 15.
De Sales entered the fourth quarter up by 15, but saw the lead whittled down to 54-53 with 5 minutes 30 seconds remaining.
Hooper then gave De Sales some breathing room with a layup. After Vega drew a foul she made both free throws as part of a 9-2 run to put the game away.
Shante Glen scored 23 points for Lourdes.
Loyola Academy 59, Seton Academy 20: Kerri Embree scored 14 points and Debbie Schick added 12 points and 10 rebounds for No. 15 Loyola (1-0).
Downers Grove South 52, Glenbard East 30: Tameka Carter’s 14 points led Downers South in the opener for both teams.
Dundee-Crown tournament: The host Chargers (1-0) routed Antioch 51-24 behind Melissa Tarrant’s 14 points. Erica Brown had 13 for Antioch.
Fenton/Elk Grove tournament: Jenny Wessel scored 26 points as Grayslake upended Westmont 56-33. . . . Fenton knocked off Zion-Benton 46-33 with Pam O’Connor’s 29 points. . . . Maggie Mahoney and Lisa Kaufmann each scored 16 as Elk Grove pulled out a 56-53 double-overtime victory over Niles West.
Lake Forest Academy 42, Woodlands Academy 39: Casey Cramer’s 16 points helped Lake Forest (1-0, 1-0) in the Independent School League.
Chicago Latin 50, Holy Trinity 19: Carrie Holst’s 14 points led nine scorers for Latin (2-0).
Hyde Park 73, Juarez 20: Michelle Adams had 20 points and Bianca Brooks added 15 to pace Hyde Park (1-1).
Luther South 67, Luther East 32: Anna Rainey’s 34 points and Tiyanna Mays’ 24 sparked Luther South (1-0). Jennifer Buksar scored 10 for Luther East (0-1).
Prosser 49, Austin 22: Kiesha Alexander’s 10 points and six assists sparked Prosser (1-0).
