THE DICTIONARY OF IMAGINARY PLACES
By Alberto Manguel and Gianni Guadalupi
Harcourt Brace, 755 pages, $40
References to Tolkien and Garcia Marquez abound in this fanciful travel guide to pretend lands in literature. Many of the comprehensive citations are entertaining, others can be baffling: Under “England,” one finds: “a vast theme park built on the Isle of Wight–not to be confused with the country of the same name–containing everything that is deemed essentially English.” The reference, it turns out, is to a place in Julian Barnes’ latest novel, “England, England.”
