Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker saw that jazz would take over the U.S. But they may not have guessed their musical seeds would spread to Asia, where groups like the Beijing Trio would put their own spin on the classic American art form. As part of the annual Chicago Asian-American Jazz Festival, the Beijing Trio jams with the great bebop drumming hero Max Roach. The festival opens at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., with a performance by 4-year-old Taiko drummer Eigen Aoki and bassist Steven Hashimoto’s group Mothra. The Beijing Trio-Max Roach performances are Nov. 19 and 21 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets: $18. Other artists will be featured during Nov. 18 and 20 shows at various locations. Call 312-280-2660.
