Electro-Lounge (The Right Stuff/Capitol)

The hipsters who lord over modern dance music want to confess a secret inspiration: They love Martin Denny, John Barry, April Stevens and other easy-listening stars who dominated in the ’50s and ’60s. The supercatchy melodies of Denny’s Hawaiian “Hypnotique” and the Dean Martin-Julie London “Sway” prove surprisingly adaptable to the fractured rhythmic jerks of contemporary drum-and-bass. Tranquility Bass reassembles Louis Prima’s jump-blues standard and Gap-ad anchor “Jump, Jive and Wail” into a snappy hodgepodge of jive rants, funky bass lines and hip-hop beats; Q-Burns Abstract Message surrounds each of Yma Sumac’s five octaves with electronic ear candy; and, most surrealistic of all, Meat Beat Manifesto remixes movie-score veteran Elmer Bernstein’s “Staccato’s Theme” into a house anthem.
