It’s a book, a CD and spaced-out fun! “The Worst Band In The Universe” is one of the best (and wackiest) sci-fi projects we’ve seen in mega-eons.

The book and soundtrack, by Australian Graeme Base, tell the tale of Sprocc. A whiz kid on the Splingtwanger (sorta like a “Star Wars” guitar), Sprocc leaves his home planet because musical creativity is banned there. Sprocc wins a “Worst Band” contest on another planet, but things get worse as he struggles to find musical freedom and his way home.

Base shows imagination and whimsy on this project. His illustrations are stunning, and his story is funny and absorbing. He also composed and played the music — and as Base proves, “bad” music can be good, especially on amusing songs like “W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G.” (“Nine left feet with 27 toes/ I’ve got no brain but that’s the way it goes.”)

“The Worst Band in the Universe” ($20) is published by Harry N. Abrams. Check bookstores.
