Library board member John Burke told aldermen Monday night that the new $13.8 million library under construction is on time, within budget and expected to open in early July 2000.
The 80,000-square-foot facility located about two blocks north of the existing library at 841 Graceland Ave. is about twice the size of the older building.
The idea to make the library the centerpiece of a downtown redevelopment that also includes retail stores and condominiums originated with former Des Plaines Mayor Paul Jung, acting mayor Tom Christiansen said Monday night. Jung died Oct. 24.
Burke told the aldermen that the current library will probably close June 1st. That building’s fate has not yet been determined.
Bids for furnishings and fixtures for the new building have been lower than expected, he said.
“We are hoping for a grand opening soon after the July 4th holiday,” Burke said.
