A consultant hired to study development in the area surrounding a proposed linkup of Interstate Highways 355 and 80 said Thursday night that New Lenox’s retail space and employment opportunities could expand.

The study was presented at a joint meeting of the Village Board and Plan Commission.

Mayor Mike Smith said the land-use plan is not only about concrete and buildings.

Smith said a citizens committee working with consultants has been adamant that open space be part of all kinds of development.

Smith told about 50 people at the village, “This is not a forum to discuss the pros and cons of the 355 extension (to I-80). We’re here to establish a land-use plan.”

Michael Donahue, a consultant from Rolf C. Campbell & Associates, said population growth estimates indicate retail and employment development could double without an adverse impact on the village’s character as a community of family homes with a small-town atmosphere.
