player ready...In a game featuring remarkable shifts of momentum and individual accomplishment, Yorkville remained unbeaten Saturday afternoon with its thrilling 35-33 victory over Riverside-Brookfield.
But the story was about the resiliency of senior R-B quarterback Joe Tess. One week after accounting for six turnovers in his team’s loss to Ridgewood, Tess nearly willed his undersized, underdog squad to victory, throwing for five touchdowns on 21-of-35 passing for 400 yards in the Suburban Prairie White game.
When Yorkville’s Jared Buckley pounced on a Tess fumble caused by defensive tackle Rosty Lysenko’s strong hit on a fourth-and-sixth with 2 1/2 minutes left, it ended a delirious second half in which Tess torched the previously sterling Yorkville defense for 257 yards and four touchdowns.
“You have to give R-B credit,” Yorkville coach Bob Williams said. “They outplayed us the second half. We did not recover from the onside kick they recovered at the start of the third quarter. Even though we were winning, it seemed like an uphill battle after that.”
Behind the sledgehammer attack of running backs Dan Niles and Tim Hanson and the effective passing of Tim Zispal, Yorkville led 21-0 late in the first half. Niles finished with 198 yards and a TD in 34 carries, Hanson gained 143 yards in 26 carries while Zispal was 5 of 10 for 84 yards and four TDs.

SAXONS PULL OFF SURPRISE
SCHAUMBURG BACK GAINS 318 YARDS
Barrington’s Dan Pohlman has been billed as one of the area’s best running backs, but it was Schaumburg’s Jason Hawkins who stole the spotlight on both sides of the ball Saturday.
Hawkins outrushed Pohlman by 140 yards and helped Schaumburg’s defense contain him as the host Saxons (5-2, 2-1) knocked off No. 15 Barrington 37-24 in the Mid-Suburban West.
Hawkins finished the game with 318 yards in 35 carries and scored three touchdowns.
With the score 24-24, Steve Kolodziej threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Cliff Pawlak to give the Saxons a six-point lead with 10 minutes left. Six minutes later, Hawkins scored his third touchdown– a 39-yard scamper–to seal the victory.
“Pohlman started to take control in the third quarter, so we put Hawkins man-on-man with him on defense,” Schaumburg coach Tom Cerasini said. “We really had two heavy fighters going one-on-one with each other and I think Hawkins had the advantage in the fourth quarter. Hawkins just wanted it both on offense and on defense.”
Schaumburg led 24-10 at halftime, before Barrington rallied in the third quarter behind Mike Heath’s 40-yard touchdown run and Pohlman’s 48-yard run.
