Village President Ben Fajardo has been moved out of intensive care and is showing improvement, but he remained in serious condition Thursday at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after suffering a stroke last week.
Fajardo, 52, was taken off a ventilator and placed in an intermediate care unit at the hospital on Wednesday, village officials said. This week, Fajardo was brought out of a drug-induced coma designed to improve his condition.
Village officials said that he is speaking but that his left side has been paralyzed as a result of the stroke.
It is uncertain how long Fajardo will be hospitalized and how much rehabilitative therapy he might need, officials said.
