Lonnie Brooks, Long John Hunter and Phillip Walker
Lone Star Shootout (Alligator)
Supergroup albums work best when they’re collaborations, not competitions; this one’s a party. These well-traveled Texas blues guitarists in black cowboy hats play variations on the same style — loud, aggressive, electric, with solos thrown in at every interlude. (Dig the Walker-Hunter duel closing “Street Walking Woman.”) But they never step on each other, and teamwork creates one terrific, piano-driven rocker (Cornelius Green’s “You’re Playing Hooky”), one funky show of harmony voices (“It’s Mighty Crazy”) and one funny zydeco anthem (“Bon Ton Roulet,” with the last word pronounced Texas-style). Though they should have edited themselves — the 15th song, “Two Trains Running,” simply peters out — they can be excused for having too much fun to stop.
