So which do you think got more coverage: Brandi Chastain’s sports bra or the death of JFK Jr.? The JFK Jr. story gets the nod, but the shirt-doffing has been the biggest non-story of the year. Why aren’t fans talking about Kristine Lilly’s Armageddon-averting header, or about why, if Mia Hamm is the Michael Jordan of women’s soccer, she was trying to get out of taking one of the United States’ penalty kicks? When was the last time you heard Jordan, in the last, crucial moments of the game, say, “Don’t give me the ball”? These are real, athletic issues. It’s an irony that at the apex of women’s sports achievement and visibility in this country, the American public and its media have focused not on the athletic accomplishments of Chastain and her teammates or on the truly crucial moments of the championship game, but on fashion.
