Ten years after accepting a lifetime ban from baseball, Pete Rose refuses to accept his absence from the Hall of Fame. In fact, he’s creeping up on it. A mere 200 yards on Main Street separates the Rose museum from baseball’s shrine. As close as that seems, it’s the longest 200-yard dash in sports and a distance that Rose almost certainly will never travel, even with a headfirst slide. Let Pete Rose have his museum. Anyone who played the game, who lived the game with his passion deserves as much. As a player, he respected the game more than anyone. As a manager, he disrespected it beyond all comprehension by betting on his team, and it doesn’t matter if he bet only on the Reds to win. How did he use his bullpen on days when he bet compared to the days he didn’t bet? That’s where the integrity of the game comes into question. That’s why 200 yards down Main Street is as close as Rose will ever get.
