Construction grants from the Illinois Capital Development Board have been released for Batavia Unit School District 101 and for Aurora East School District 131.

Batavia’s $4.8 million grant will be for the additions to its middle school and for the construction of two elementary schools.

The school district had said in the spring during its successful campaign for a $26.3 million referendum proposal, the largest in the district’s history, that the burden on taxpayers would be reduced if the grant was received.

The $16.2 million funds received by Aurora East are headed for construction additions at 12 of its elementary schools, its Cowherd, Simmons and Waldo Middle Schools and East Aurora High School.

In December 1998 the district received a $2 million award, one of eight districts in the state that received a total of $99 million as part of a $1.4 billion state school infrastructure fund created by legislators in 1997.

The release of the grants was announced by state Rep. Tim Schmitz (R-Batavia).

“The cities and towns in the 42nd district are growing at a fast rate, and there is a definite need to expand and construct new classrooms,” Schmitz said.
