The NCAA is considering a vote to make men’s basketball players sit out their freshman year. It’s an absurd measure. The NCAA’s stated reason for doing this is in the name of education–too few male basketball players graduate compared with other athletes. Yeah, right! Everyone knows it is a shot at all of the underclassmen who leave school early for a chance at the NBA. By keeping a blue-chip recruit on the sidelines until he is a sophomore, you, in effect, put his NBA future and earning power on hold while ensuring the college he attends gets his services for at least two, maybe three years. . . . The bottom line: The NCAA should allow all student-athletes who qualify academically to play any sport. And leave it to the NBA to worry about the influx of underclassmen into the league.
FRESHMEN INELIGIBLE? A BAD IDEA
