An intergovernmental agreement approved by the Mokena Village Board this week will secure federal financial aid for improvements at the intersection of LaPorte and Wolf Roads.

Trustees voted to enter into a funding agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation that will provide federal funding covering 80 percent of the cost.

The work includes turn lanes, signal modifications, curbs, gutters, a 10-foot bike path, lighting and storm sewer improvements. It will cost about $1.2 million, of which $984,200 will come from federal funds and $246,000 from the village.

“We believe that was a good investment,” Mayor Robert Chiszar said.

Improvements will speed up traffic flow at the intersection, where plans are in place to build a Walgreens drugstore, a key piece in the town’s economic development plan.
