Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Wish I’d had one of these when I was a sick little one. It’s called “The Get Better Box,” and you can make it yourself-a special box of simple treasures to bring out only when the kids are sick or feeling gloomy.

Take a cigar box or any other medium-sized box; decoupage or otherwise decorate the outside. Inside, tuck a coterie of special things to play with in bed or sprawled on the couch: old-fashioned playing cards, dollhouse people, a prism, a collection of seashells, a kaleidoscope.

“Things from when you were little or that remind you of when you were little,” says Colby Beutel, a Chicago mother of two, who shared this idea.

And then, when your little one is all better, wash everything off and lay it out in the sun to dry, almost a cleansing ritual. Pack the box back up (you can always add or subtract what’s in there to make it a surprise), and put it in a safe place-only to come out again when someone is under the weather. (And who says it’s only for kids?)
