The Des Plaines City Council on Monday night voted 5-1 to table until April 19 a vote on a 3.5 percent pay increase for about 60 non-union city employees.
The measure was raised publicly when former Mayor Ted Sherwood objected to it and asked Ald. Patricia Beauvais to pull it from the consent agenda.
“If you ask around this room tonight, I think you would find very few non-government workers who receive one or even two automatic pay increases every year,” Sherwood said. “I think this payroll system is flawed.”

City Manager Wally Douthwaite said union and non-union raises have been the same for six years.
After the meeting, Mayor Paul Jung said, “If we decide, as a City Council, to grant union employees (a pay increase), I think it’s only fair to grant non-union employees the same increase.”
At least 80 percent of the city’s employees belong to unions, Douthwaite said.
