With April 15 fast approaching, state Senator Terry Link (D-Vernon Hills) is urging Illinois families with annual incomes below $26,000 to take advantage of a free tax counseling service in Waukegan and to apply for the federal earned income tax credit.

Link hopes low-income families take advantage of the service to help them prepare their tax returns because many might qualify for various credits including the federal income credit, tuition tax credits, child tax credit and the dependent care credit, according to Link spokesman Nick Palmer.

The tax workshops will be held at the College of Lake County Lake Shore Campus, 33 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

Sessions are being held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until April 15.

Families wishing to attend should bring the following items: all W-2 forms; 1099 forms (if any); Social Security numbers or individual taxpayer identification numbers for all dependents; and, if possible, last year’s tax return.
