A monument marking the site of the Old Brick Tavern, once a stagecoach stop along the Sauk Trail, was dedicated last week.
The monument at the entrance to the Bluestone Bay subdivision at 2600 E. Lincoln Highway was dedicated in a brief ceremony, featuring speakers from the New Lenox Historical Society, the Will County Historic Preservation Commission, the Village of New Lenox and subdivision developers.
The building was also the home of Samuel Haven, an early settler and abolitionist.
Local legend describes the building, built in 1846, as a stop on the Civil War-era Underground Railroad.
Over the years, the building fell into disrepair. It was razed in 1995, just days before it could have been declared a protected landmark.
